More dangerous than Ergenekon

The Ergenekon case is as important as saving Turkey from three century-long chaos, inter-institutional conflicts and forlornness. When justice is manifested in this case, Turkey will enter a new road. This is a road in which the will of nation declines all kinds of custodies, in which freedoms expand, rule of law is provided and everyone can render an account of their actions. Shortly, this is the road of democratization. The road is rough, arduous and hard. Yet, there is no way back.

The bigness of difficulty stems from the fact that those who resist are such power groups as constitutional institutions, business world and media. However, the biggest difficulty is that a mindset persists not to change. This mindset is more dangerous than Ergenekon. Because if Ergenekon case is concluded punishing 40 to 50 people, even if numerous retired generals and civilians are sentenced for having pro-coup mindset, as long as this mindset lives and it encourages power groups, tomorrow the same illegal structures will continue threatening the nation, the state and our future.

Today I want to remind the presence and power of this mindset to you with an incident. The most vital development about the Ergenekon case is the decision that the case has been merged with the case of an attack on Council of State. Well then, on the very day when the attack was carried out and a murder was committed (May 17, 2006), what did the owners of this mindset who complain about extrajudicial execution say?

Let us start with the full page caption of the Milliyet daily in the following day: “BULLET TO SECULARIZM. Those who know the attacker explain: 28 years old, religious, nationalist…” Let us continue with the news piece from Hürriyet daily: “President Ahmet Necdet Sezer stated the attack made on the Council of State is actually directed to secular Republic of Turkey and those who caused the attack must revise their behaviors once more and said, ‘No one will be able to destroy the regime of the state, in other words democracy, interpreting secularism in different ways and emptying it.'

“Higher Education Board (YÖK) Chairman Erdoğan Teziç read aloud the press explanation prepared by the committee of rectors in a meeting of one hour and said, ‘All these developments are clear signs of how fatally big the danger directed to the secular republic are.”

“Council of State Deputy Chairman Tansel Çölaşan said, ‘These are all because of headscarf decision… Those who spoil the social agreement are guilty. They know themselves.”

“May 18, 2006. Protest to government in funeral. Minister [Abdullah] Gül who came to the Council of State to ceremony was met with slogans calling government to resign. The crowd applauded the Chief of General Staff and commanders-in-chief of armed forces. Such slogans as ‘Turkey is secular and it will be,' ‘Mullahs to Iran' and ‘Government, resign.' Ministers [Cemil] Çiçek and [Abdullatif] Şener were attacked.”

“About the public reaction to ministers in the funeral, [former president Süleyman] Demirel said, ‘It is impossible to comment about what the indignant public does.”

“The commanders-in-chief of armed forces who did not attend to the ceremony came in front of the Council of State walking from Sıhhiye military recreational facility. The soldiers were met with applauds. Meanwhile, the slogan ‘Army of Atatürk, fear of shariah' was shouted.”

“May 19, 2006. Council of State, Constitutional Court, chairmen of Court of Appeals and chief prosecutors came to the building where the attack was carried out after visiting Anıtkabir. In a statement read by Council of State Chairman Sumru Çörtoğlu, it was said, ‘Due to this attack, we remind the duties of those who are liable to protect the secular and democratic state structure apart from the judiciary once again.”

(Have you ever heard such a clear coup invitation from judicial representatives? -H.G.-)

“[Deniz] Baykal said, ‘The politics became bloodstained. The prime minister accuses the opposition when the poisonous seeds they plant blossom their flowers. He cannot get rid of the responsibility. He must see where he leads Turkey to as soon as possible and he must pull himself together.”

While reading these, you must have remembered the funeral of Uğur Mumcu, the republican rallies and many more…
