By making it seem like you are the target, you can quickly become a hero. Most importantly, you can use it as a cover for certain issues. It especially helps to camouflage the power wars within the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). The evidence that surfaced with the second indictment into the Ergenekon terrorist organization provides important details on efforts that had been taken to obscure and conceal certain issues. Evidence of smear campaigns that was blamed on the "community" and the tensions concerning the former Chief of General Staff Gen. Yaşar Büyükanıt was discovered in Şener Eruygur's office. Was Eruygur a member of the "community"? Or does the word "community" refer to the organization that Eruygur established as part of efforts to plot a coup? Certainly the answer to all of these questions is NO! So what is the target of this diversion? Retired Gen. Altay Tokat had told the news weekly Aktüel that factions had developed in the military because of clashes over who should advance up the ladder.
"There is an upward pyramid. As you move up the pyramid, clashes occur because it's narrower at the top. It is a clash over moving up. Different groups form because the decisions of the military council are not monitored by the judiciary and personal preferences prevail," he said.
Just about everyone in the media was aware of the above-mentioned war and group formations. But those who supported the formation of groups or who wanted to settle some other deal amid the confusion preferred using the term "community" frequently. Among these people is Enis Berberoğlu, who recently confessed to this in a piece he wrote a few days ago. In his article he wrote:
"A smear campaign was launched [against Büyükanıt] on the Internet. Büyükanıt's grandfather, his health and his brother, who was killed many years ago, were used in the smear campaign. Many people, including myself, thought the smear campaign was the work of the [Justice and Development Party] AK Party and the community. But in the additions of the Ergenekon indictment, namely in folder number 34, there are such documents that make me wonder if we were wrong about the persons who carried out the insults against Gen. Yaşar. The folder also contained information on Büyükanıt's health reports and prescribed medications and doctor’s visits, as well as private documents. For example, there was personal information on other suspects who testified in court. And there were also subjective biographies filled with many adjectives of people identified as 'close' to Filiz Büyükanı t."
The point that Hürriyet daily's Ankara representative has reached is very important, especially considering that he is journalist who had asked Büyükanit during a press conference if the leader of a certain community, who currently lives abroad, was involved in the smear campaign against the military.
He had made similar comments concerning the appointment of İlker Başbuğ as the chief of general staff. Let's see if he is going to make a confession about that. But there are many people who cannot do what Berberoğlu did and confess that they may have been mistaken. By acting more cool-headed than the media, Büyükyanit had said that he could not blame anyone without any evidence. He probably made such a response because he knew something. At this point, it would be beneficial to note that shortly after that press conference, the Ergenekon suspects were bombarded. In fact, journalist and Kanaltürk founder Tuncay Özkan had even said that the Turkish people would set up a new military. The documents that were seized from the former gendarmerie commander have exposed the imaginary bogeyman called "community." It is obvious this was an "operation to conceal" some facts. Everyone must be more careful from now on. Those who want to divert attention toward this imaginary bogeyman will not be able to do this as easily as they did before.
