Obviously somebody hit the button because there have been murders and attacks in mountains and city centers. It is not hard to predict that additional murders will follow. What is going on again?
This time the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs has endorsed Armenian “genocide” allegations. Moreover, the Turkish Parliament is about to issue a memorandum that will authorize a cross-border military operation.
Turkey’s agenda has changed all of a sudden. However, the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) received strong support in the general elections, its election success in the Southeast raised hopes and the determination was reinforced for the EU bid and the new constitution. Now the constitution drafting process has reportedly been suspended. It is also thought that the terrorist organization may gain partial strength following a probable operation. Also discussed are the US-Turkey relations, which may move to another dimension due to the northern Iraq issue. Two sectors were particularly bothered by the landslide victory of the AK Party, whose rule was affirmed by a 47 percent haul of the vote in the elections: one is the status quo and the other the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) separatist terror organization.
The status quo was uneasy because a political party that they did not support took the initiative and is in power -- it even elected the president. The magnitude of the domination and influence of the disliked party was even greater than that of the Democrat Party (DP) and the Motherland Party (ANAVATAN) this time. The steps taken to amend the constitution might have facilitated the EU bid and subsequent democratization might have led to the erosion of the status quo’s domination. Any developments that would hamper the EU path would also be useful for the status quo.
The PKK was uneasy because unlike its widespread propaganda, it became obvious that the reasonable majority in the Southeast did not favor separatism. The slogan, “All Kurds support the PKK,” was slammed in the face of those making the allegation. It was evident that the majority of the people supported a resolution based on the integrity of the homeland.
The AK Party had a good opportunity and chance because of its success in the Southeast to contain further recruitment by the PKK through democratization. The high-level state authorities admitted that the state failed to stop participation in the terrorist organization throughout the 23-year-long combat waged against the terrorist group. The PKK and those who use it were bothered by the possibility of containment through democratic measures to be implemented by the AK Party.
The AK Party could not remain a bystander at a time when the mothers were crying and terrorism levels were increasing. Today, Erdoğan’s government is under a lot of pressure. The imposition of the cross-border operation as the only viable solution took the government to Parliament to discuss the matter. However, Turkey has held 24 cross-border operations so far -- we all know that it is not the solution. We know that, but the government is at the point of no return.
The public pressure, the elevated terrorism and the inability to unite at the summit of the state should not stop us seeing the way out. Above all, the government should remain committed to the EU bid and democratization agenda. The reforms should not be suspended. If a cross-border operation is required, it should be done in reliance on technological facilities and strong intelligence. The relations with the US should not be jeopardized. The utmost attention should be paid to prevent the PKK from becoming popular.
The hatred and conflict front is attacking now. Reason, love and conciliation should stand firm to defeat the enemy.
