The attitude taken by the Motherland Party (ANAVATAN) and True Path Party (DYP) saying they defend the democratic line represented by Adnan Menderes and Turgut Özal. Unfortunately the leaders of these parties, Mr. Erkan Mumcu and Mr. Mehmet Ağar, hesitate to display the attitude expected from them.Is it meaningful to say “let’s hold early elections and let the new parliament elect the president” while the Constitutional process is functioning and there is a presidential candidate for the election, two days left to the first round of voting? It is evident that those who claim to be defending the line of Menderes and Özal cannot estimate what reactions they will cause among the voters of the central right by supporting the cause of CHP, the eternal enemy of the right wing.
The center right has a voter base which does not want to vote for the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) but who would never vote for the CHP. These people are currently studying the situation. The ANAVATAN and the DYP are in an effort of alliance for the coming general elections. The meeting of this search and effort depends on the principled actions and attitudes of the two parties’ leaders. That they chose to serve as a tool to the CHP’s game and to support its policies in the Presidential elections may leave the ANAVATAN and the DYP below the parliamentary threshold of 10 percent of the popular vote, in the elections to be held in four to five months’ time, even if they form a coalition. This result would mean a farewell from the two leaders to politics.
The CHP has displayed a rude and harsh understanding of opposition as it acts as the parliamentary representative of the circles who cannot digest the AK Party. It is up to the CHP. The ballot box will be a testing place for leader Deniz Baykal’s polices. What is dangerous is that the law is being politicized and there are efforts to make the law into a tool of the struggle for power. The first round of the presidential election will be held today and the efforts to lock the election to a figure are both cautionary and regrettable for the superiority of the law. Is this election held to elect a president or not? The fact that the voting will be invalid unless 367 deputies are present in the voting and the CHP will take it to the Constitutional Court is the last attempt of the AK Party’s opponents. They do what suits them. However attitudes and behavior that will ultimately support this effort will never suit the ANAVATAN and DYP. They will be labeled as the “collaborators” of the CHP and offend right-wing voters unless they take part in the voting. If less than 367 deputies are present for the voting, the CHP will take the matter to the Constitutional Court and if a ruling supporting CHP’s objection comes out by accident -- I say this because the Constitutional Court has rejected previous objections in this frame -- then the whole world will see the AK Party will come to power alone, with a majority of vote over 50 percent this time, in an early election that will be held out of necessity.
The candidacy of Abdullah Gül has relaxed all of Turkey, except for a circle that regards whoever does not support their views and opinions as their enemy. The markets have given a positive reaction and the business circles, including Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen’s Association (TÜSİAD), have expressed their satisfaction. EU member states and Muslim countries have given positive assessments, highlighting Gül’s reliable, calm and tolerant character and statesman-like attributes. Thus the right-wing voters will never forget Mr. Mumcu’s and Mr. Ağar’s displaying an attitude against the Parliament in today’s voting and their cooperation with those who want to play with the national will.
