MUSTAFA ÜNAL, ZAMAN
Critical remarks were recently directed at main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), and, unfortunately, they all had an element of truth in them.
However, I will try to say something positive about the current party leadership and its strategies. I believe the fact that current CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has set a goal of creating a new CHP is hopeful, but, on the other hand, his failure so far in doing so is disappointing. Yet, there have been obvious attempts to make the new CHP a reality. One of those attempts is that Kılıçdaroğlu is the only CHP leader who has not used the word “reactionaryism” -- or the threat of it -- out of nowhere and or so repetitively like his predecessors. He has not put forward or used symbols such as the headscarf or veils when he attacked the government. He is more aware of the fact that in order to become a stronger party, he needs to appeal to all groups in society. These are important steps in becoming a new CHP. However, these are the only positive notes I have been able to come up with.
