The Beşiktaş soccer team issued a condolence message yesterday. Devoting the homepage of its official Web site to Okyar, the club said: “We are in inexpressible grief over the loss of our elder brother, the legendry Beşiktaş captain and the unforgettable soccer player Vedat Okyar.”
During his years with the team, the indispensable striker made 253 appearances for the Beşiktaş Black Eagles. After leaving and becoming a writer, he was widely acclaimed for the writing style he used in his sports articles. Okyar used every opportunity presented to him to voice his passion for Beşiktaş and became the most beloved commentator of many Beşiktaş fans. Okyar was born in Bursa and, over the course of his career, wore the jerseys of Bursaspor, Beşiktaş, Diyarbakır and Karagümrük. He played as a striker for Beşiktaş between 1968 and 1976 and became captain of the team in 1975. Okyar was capped 33 times for the Turkish national team and took up sports writing after retiring from soccer.
