The Turkish national athletics teams’ head coach Muharrem Or told reporters at İstanbul Atatürk Airport that he expects at least seven or eight medals in Helsinki, where the 2012 European Athletics Championships will be held June 27-July 1.

Or says this year’s squad of 70 athletes is the largest contingent the country has ever sent to a European event. “This is record participation. The first group leaves today [Monday]. The rest will come according to the competition schedule,” he said. He added that the performance of the athletes will be an indicator of Turkey’s performance at the Summer Olympics in London. “Therefore, it is an important competition. Unless something goes wrong I predict we will win seven or eight medals,” said Or.
