Prisons

I think that before calling for the justice minister’s resignation, we should take a closer look at ourselves. We have been focusing on the Silivri Prison’s conditions just because it houses political and well-known figures and while ignoring the rest of the prisons’ conditions.

Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin has had a press conference and given a briefing about the government’s moves to improve conditions in prisons. A total of 208 prisons have been shut down and 197 more will be closed in the next six years. On the other hand, 68 new prisons, housing 50,000 prisoners, have been constructed, and 196 more prisons with the capacity of housing 108,000 inmates are planned to be constructed in the next six years. So you see, there have been some solid moves on this issue. It is easy to accuse others, but I wish we cared about inmates not for political reasons, but just out of pure concern.
