National Security Council convenes to discuss Syria

Turkey's National Security Council (MGK) convened on Monday afternoon under the chairmanship of President Abdullah Gül, reportedly to focus on a peace plan by UN-Arab league envoy Kofi Annan.

The meeting's main topic is thought to be Syria, its border with Turkey, other Middle East-related issues, the political crises in neighboring Iraq and the NATO summit. Participants in the MGK meeting include Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel and former Hakkari Governor Muammer Türker, who was appointed MGK secretary-general last Friday.
