Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, a strong critic of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, drew a parallel between the bloody campaign against civilians by the Syrian government and the Battle of Karbala during a speech on Friday.

“What happened in Karbala 1,332 years ago is what is happening in Syria today,” Erdoğan said at an international conference titled “Arab Spring and Peace in the Middle East: Muslim and Christian Perspectives.”

Erdoğan stated that the Karbala tragedy would never be forgotten and that this painful incident must be a lesson to all, referring to a battle between supporters and relatives of Prophet Muhammad's grandson Husain ibn Ali on the one side and a military detachment from the forces of Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph, in what is now Iraq in the year 680.

Islam considers human beings the most sacred of all creatures regardless of their faith, sect or status, he said, adding that Turkey doesn't have any prejudice against any ethnic origin, religion or sect.

The prime minister on Wednesday also condemned the brutal crackdown of the Assad regime during a meeting of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), saying that Assad has created a terrorist state in Syria.

This is a distortion of historic facts. Shia were at receiving end of violence back then and they are at the receiving end of violence now. This is distorting historic facts 180 degree for political gain, It will backfire.

Erdoğan is trying to start a sectarian Sunni-Shia (Salafi vs. Alawi) war and religious conflict inside Syria. But by referring to Karbala, Erdoğan is risking to provoke a Turkish Alevi, Zaza Alevi and Arab-Hatay Alawi uprising, as well as laicist coup d'état against the AKP government. If Erdoğan is...

@Yavus well i seem to recall George Bush saying they will carry out a CRUSADE against Iraq. Turkeys secularism has been used to surpress our religion/culture so must be changed to suit what belongs to us and not Europe. Also Sunni's revere Imam Huseyin and will defend his honour as much if not more ...

A bit of interpretation. Mr. Erdogan is actually trying to indicate to Shiites, who revere Hussein much more than Sunnis, that they should be on Turkey's side, and also indicating to them that Turkey is not engaged in a secterian issue but rather acts according to Islamic and humanistic principles. ...
