OIC addresses human rights violations against Muslims in Myanmar

3 August 2012 /TODAYSZAMAN.COM
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said on Friday in a press release that it addressed human rights violations committed against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar during a consultative meeting with civil society and humanitarian organizations from the Muslim world.

The OIC said it held the meeting to discuss the plight of Rohingya Muslims in light of recent tragic events and that about 30 organizations from different OIC member states participated, as well as representatives from the United Nations and a number of international humanitarian organizations.

The meeting strongly condemned gross violations of international humanitarian law in the case of the Rohingya and called for actors to use all means to put pressure on the government of Myanmar to grant international humanitarian organizations access to affected areas in order to provide urgently needed humanitarian assistance.

The meeting resulted in a number of recommendations that will be presented before the OIC. It also formed a committee to follow up on developments in Myanmar and to communicate them to all concerned parties.
