Women’s amateur theater group getting ready for Altın Koza

1 August 2012, Wednesday /TODAY’S ZAMAN
Foraying into cinema with an amateur spirit, a women’s theater group from the village of Arslanköy in the southern province of Mersin is getting ready for a major film competition in Adana.

The shooting of the women’s movie, “Yün Bebek” (Wool Baby), has already been finished but the editing initially could not be completed because of financial shortcomings. But Mersin Governor Hasan Basri Güzeloğlu has stepped up and provided funding for the all-woman movie, which tells a story of violence against women by women. As soon as the editing is finished, “Yün Bebek” will apply to take part in the Altın Koza (Golden Boll) International Film Festival’s national feature competition. The festival is scheduled for Sept. 17-23.

The founder of the group and director of the movie, Ümmiye Koçak, said her dreams have come true as she will be able to put her film in the competition at Altın Koza. “I thank him [Güzeloğlu] as a village woman,” she said during her visit to the governor on Tuesday, adding: “All I wanted was to finish the movie and make it compete at Altın Koza. I thank God that all my dreams have come true.”

In a related development, the Adana Municipality, the organizer of the festival, is focusing on boosting the international popularity of Turkish movies ahead of this year’s edition. Adana Vice Mayor Zihni Aldırmaz said in a written statement on Tuesday that the domestic productions will be introduced to international buyers as part of a festival event called “Adana Pazarı” (Adana Market), in cooperation with the Movie Producers Professional Association (SE-YAP).
