Those who use every critical development as a tool to overthrow the Justice and Development (AK Party) government since it first came to power in 2002 are now using the Syrian crisis for the same purpose.
I had a long chat with Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu about this. As far as I could read between the lines of our chat, the government is well aware of this campaign to smear the government with harsh criticism and also of who is carrying it out and how. According to Davutoğlu, these campaigns have two focal points: The people carrying out the campaign are spreading the fear that the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is establishing a state in northern Syria while also provoking a revolt among Syrian refugees in southern Turkey. The state, however, is well aware of these covert plans.
