A man reportedly parked his car in front of the sports center in the Maltepe district of İstanbul. The owners of the sports center, national taekwondo team coach Ahmet Sarı and taekwondo coach Emrah Kaygusuz, then warned the driver not to park in front of the sports center due to limited parking, lifting the car's windshield wipers.
The man in the parked car, Burçin Eren, became angry and swore at the two coaches. He then pulled out a gun, opening fire on the two men, according to eyewitnesses.
Sarı died in the ambulance on the way to Kartal State Hospital, while Kaygusuz died at the hospital. Eren fled the scene of the crime in his car and is still at large, with police searching for him.
Turkey Taekwondo Federation Chairman Metin Şahin returned from the London Olympics following news of Sarı's death to pay his condolences and attend the funeral. Sarı had been in Manchester in May for the European Taekwondo Championship.
