Former Turkish national team players Okan Buruk and Emre Aşık have said the title they won as teenagers in the UEFA U18 Football Championship in 1992 is unforgettable.
Currently serving as assistant coach in the senior national football team, Buruk said that championship portended good days ahead for Turkish football. After winning that title, Buruk was also a member of the senior national team, which came in third in the 2002 World Cup. “I was invited to the senior national team three months after we became the champion. I remember my enthusiasm and happiness doubling.” Aşık, who is now the coach of the U19 and U18 national football teams, also remembers the old days: “We won a very important victory. That success also opened the door of my future in football.” Aşık said today the members of that team are helping young players to succeed. “I believe today’s youth will exceed this success.”
