Turkish press review

20 July 2012 /THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY
On Friday Turkish dailies mostly covered ongoing violence in Syria, developments within the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and the start of Ramadan.

Several Turkish dailies covered ongoing violence in numerous Syrian cities and the Yeni Şafak daily ran a headline that read “Escape from Damascus” concerning a warning issued by the Syrian government to its own people. Yeni Şafak said, “The Syrian government, which is planning to repulse the Free Syrian Army, warned the citizens of Damascus, saying, ‘Leave the city within 48 hours of time'.”

Several Turkish dailies reported on the victory of CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu after the party's regular congress earlier this week. After conducting an exclusive interview with the CHP leader, the Vatan daily ran the following headline: “I will expel whoever harms the party.” The paper quoted Kılıçdaroğlu saying, “I will not forgive or keep in the party those who work against the party during the elections.”

The start of Ramadan was also widely hailed in the Turkish media. Most Turkish dailies announced that they would be running special series and articles during the fasting month of Ramadan.
