Foreign Visa cardholders spend 14 pct more in 4 months

Turkey has seen foreign tourists using Visa credit cards spend 508 million euros in the first four months of the year, a 14 percent increase over the same period last year.

A report released by Visa Europe revealing the tourism revenue in Mediterranean countries has found Visa cardholders from the UK spent the most money while traveling in Turkey. This was the same case for the January-April period of last year. Visa cardholders from Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan were the two that made the highest increase in spending over the same period of 2011.

The amount of money spent by foreign visitors to Turkey in the first four months of last year was 444 million euros, a 32 percent rise over the same months of 2010. According to the Visa Europe report, UK Visa cardholders spent 3.8 percent more in the first four months over the same months of 2011 at 56.6 million euros. Russian, German, French and US citizens followed the UK with spending of 48.4, 44.1, 41.1 and 40.4 million euros, respectively. Saudi Arabian Visa cardholders increased their spending in Turkey in January-April by 69 percent over the same period last year. Azerbaijanis, Russians and the Swedes followed with 64, 37.3 and 31.4 percent increases, respectively.

Meanwhile, the largest amount of money visitors spent with their Visa cards in Turkey over the given period was on airfare. Foreign Visa cardholders spent 2.8 million euros on flights in Turkey in January-April of this year.
