Rather than thinking of why and how the incident on July 5, 2009 occurred, the repetition of such incidents and violent acts on Urumqi locals that cause civilians to often riot should be well considered. Why do such incidents periodically happen in China? Why does China treat the Uyghurs so harshly? Uyghur Muslims, who make up a big portion of the population in northwestern China, have never accepted the Chinese invasion throughout their history. And when the Uyghur Turks, who have a strong and well-established identity and civilization, encounter the Chinese government’s dismissive stance towards them, conflicts erupt. The Chinese try to both culturally assimilate the Muslims and encourage ethnic Chinese to move to Urumqi, increasing the tension in the region.
