Referee given 10 days’ medical leave after attack

19 June 2012 /TODAY’S ZAMAN
A referee who was injured by a football player during a game was certified by a Denizli hospital as medically unfit for work for 10 days on Monday.

Referee Erdem Gökalp was officiating a second league amateur game between Kuşpınarspor and Kocaderespor in the western province of Denizli when the attack occurred. The match, which Kuşpınarspor was leading 6-1, was suspended after Kocaderespor footballer F.Ö. head-butted Gökalp after the referee had given him a red card. The referee had a broken nose and was taken to Pamukkale University Hospital. The footballer was detained after the incident and was reportedly released pending trial.
