Quran courses offered in many mosques have started now that schools are out for summer break. Students attending these courses learn basic Islamic teachings as well as how to read the Quran.

Star: “Fight over fan kills 13 people,” ran the headline of the top article reporting on a fire which broke out after a fight among prisoners in a Şanlıurfa prison late on Saturday, claiming the lives of 13 inmates. The story reported that the people who started the fight had fought many times before, but the fight on Saturday broke out over which place should be cooled by the fans the most. “If there is any evidence of abuse of duty or negligence [on the part of the authorities], this will be meticulously investigated,” Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin has said.

Bugün: “There are traps deep [in Ankara],” said the major story’s headline, quoting Republican People’s Party (CHP) Deputy Chairman Gürsel Tekin, who recently handed in his resignation. Speaking to the daily, Tekin said he never liked what he saw in the political world in Ankara. “There are traps, plots, backstabbing in the deep parts of that world. This is true for all the political parties. I am writing about all this in the book that I am currently working on. The political world is the environment for establishing the ground for a military takeover in Turkey,” he said.

Hürriyet: “A border gate to be opened in Uludere,” said the headline of a front-page story reporting that the government is preparing to open a gate at its border with Syria in Uludere, a district of the southeastern province of Şırnak, where the military killed 34 smugglers late last year after mistaking them for terrorists. The story said this move aims to get the border trade with Syria under control. İhsan Şener, a deputy from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), had previously promised that border trade in Uludere would be brought under control.
