Court merges Workers’ Party probe with Ergenekon investigation

14 June 2012, Thursday / TODAYSZAMAN.COM
Turkish court has decided to merge ongoing investigation into members of the Workers’ Party (İP) with Ergenekon coup plot probe on the grounds of suspected links between the two cases.

There are now 18 cases that are being investigated within the Ergenekon probe and the number of total suspects reached to 273, 68 of them behind bars.

The İstanbul 13th High Criminal Court accepted in April a new indictment in the case, which mentions 14 suspects, including Mehmet Perinçek, the son of Workers’ Party (İP) leader Doğu Perinçek who is currently jailed as a key Ergenekon suspect.

Other suspects include Aydınlık newspaper staff members Ruhsar Şenoğlu, Özlem Konur Usta and Caner Taşpınar.

Ergenekon is a shadowy crime organization that has alleged links within the state and is suspected of plotting to topple the government. In August of last year, counterterrorism units raided the offices of the İP and the Ulusal Kanal TV station, which is known for its connections to the İP, as part of an investigation into Ergenekon.

İstanbul prosecutor Mehmet Ali Pekgüzel told before the court on Thursday that there is a link between the case and the Ergenekon probe and demanded the merge of the two cases.
