The “Sultans of the Net,” as the Turkish women’s volleyball team is popularly known, aimed for first place at the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix 1 in South Korea on Sunday.
But it was not to be after Turkey was beaten 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 25-20) by Cuba in a thrilling final at Sajik Indoor Gymnasium in Busan, South Korea. The result means the “Sultans” came in second in the tournament. Phase two of the tournament (Grand Prix 2) will be held in Belgrade on June 15-18 with Turkey taking on host Serbia, Cuba and Argentina.
