Calls for two-year degree graduates to have shorter-term military service dismissed

Ramazan Kerim Özkan, a deputy from the Republican People's Party (CHP), presented a proposal in Parliament last week, putting forward the idea that if two-year degree graduates have the right to perform their obligatory service as short-term reserve officers, then two-year degree academies in universities would attract much more attention from students, the ntvmsnbc.com website reported on Monday.

In response to the proposal, Yılmaz stated that the current regulation will remain in place, saying that giving that right to two-year degree graduates would constitute a contradiction in military law in the face of the fact that graduation from a four-year college is a precondition to be an officer in the military.
