Turkey has entered a new phase in its foreign policy with the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), particularly after Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu started to steer it.
Turkey has begun to appear at every international event. Of course, being a leading country rather than a nation led by others has its risks and problems. But it is a long road to becoming a true leader, and it is still too early to come to definite conclusions, because diplomatic processes yield results in the long term, and also because I believe the activities of NGOs and Turkish schools founded across the world will help Turkish foreign relations more than we think they will. I recently visited London to see the “Türkiye’de Zaman/Time in Turkey” photo exhibition, and from what I observed there, I am once again certain that in order to become a big country, we have to think big first.
