On the verge of an historic mistake

31 May 2012 /GÜLTEKİN AVCI
“We had too much self-confidence and were weak because of it. They are making the same mistake today. … The picture will turn upside down within two years.”

These are the statements of Rear Adm. Cem Aziz Çakmak [currently jailed for his suspected involvement in a coup plot dubbed “Sledgehammer”] in a recording. This recording and another one recently found indicate the danger of a possible junta within the military. The statements above only make it clear that there is still a deep structure in the military waiting for the right time for an armed intervention. If the government takes this possibility seriously, it will not lose anything but it will gain much. To wait while believing “they cannot do it” is the biggest risk a government can ever take. The worst case scenario is that they will lead Turkey into a war with Syria thinking that “if Turkey can’t be ours, then it will be no one’s.”
