Turkish citizen killed in Aleppo

29 May 2012, Tuesday /TODAY'S ZAMAN
A 63-year-old Turkish citizen was shot dead in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo on Monday, becoming the sixth Turkish national to have been killed since the uprising began last year.

Aliye Taş, originally from Turkey's southern province of Kilis, was driving in Aleppo's Azez district when she was caught in a firefight between regime troops and opposition fighters. She was in Aleppo on business. Her body was brought to the Kilis State Hospital morgue. The body will later be taken to the Adana Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) for an autopsy.

March of last year marked a tragic time for Turkish nationals as three Turkish truck drivers were killed in separate incidents. Suphi Ezer, 45, was critically injured in Syria and later died in a hospital in Gaziantep, a Turkish city near the Syrian border. In mid-March Mustafa Üçtaş, a father of three, was shot to death in Idlib. On March 15 Hasan Koçak died in the armed conflict as he was passing through Syria.

In December of last year Münir Dural was killed in Syria while in transit to Saudi Arabia for work. Dural's vehicle was confiscated after he crossed the border into Syria and he was caught in a firefight as his car was being searched. In November of last year three buses carrying pilgrims back to Turkey from Saudi Arabia, where they had gone to perform the Islamic pilgrimage, were attacked at a checkpoint in Syria. Two Turkish citizens were wounded as a result of the attack.

Two Turkish journalists had been missing in Syria for two months but were recently released alive.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has issued a travel warning for Turkish citizens planning to travel to Syria. It warns Turkish nationals not to travel to Syria unless absolutely necessary due to difficulties in establishing public order.
