Turkish athlete Ayşe Iryna Kravchuk won a bronze medal in the women’s saber competition at the European U23 Championships held in Bratislava, Slovakia, on Sunday, clinching the second European medal for Turkey.
Kravchuk had to make do with a bronze medal after she failed to advance to the finals, losing to her Romanian opponent, Mihaela Bulica. Her bronze medal was the second medal won by a Turkish athlete at a European competition. Last March, Ilgın Sarban won Turkey’s first-ever European fencing medal in the country’s 89-year-old fencing history at the European Cadets and Junior Championships in Croatia. Turkish Fencing Federation President Müminhan Bilgin told reporters after Kravchuk’s medal that bigger successes would come in the future.
