Missing Ukrainian hiker perishes on glacier

16 May 2012, Wednesday /TODAY'S ZAMAN
The body of Ukrainian hiker Inna Garodyska was found on Wednesday morning after an overnight search for the missing woman, who authorities say likely fell while hiking on a glacier and perished some time on Tuesday.

Garodyska, who had been missing along with 11 other Ukrainian trekkers since Tuesday afternoon, was hiking atop a glacier on Demirkazık Mountain in Niğde province's Aladağlar National Park. Authorities told the Anatolia news agency on Wednesday that Garodyska slipped while hiking the glacier and fell roughly 100 meters, sustaining fatal injuries.

The 12 Ukrainian hikers had been camping in Aladağlar Park over the past 10 days, and reportedly called the Ukrainian Embassy in Ankara on Tuesday afternoon to tell them that they had become lost while hiking on Demirkazık.

The Prime Ministry's Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) sent rescue teams and helicopters on Tuesday evening, and a rescue helicopter located the stranded hikers early Wednesday morning. A rescue helicopter transported the body of Garodyska and two hikers who had sustained minor injuries to Çukurova University's Balcalı Hospital in the province of Adana. The other hikers told rescue teams that they planned to descend the mountain on their own.
