Galatasaray captain Ayhan Akman, who recently announced his retirement as a professional football player, was at the Zaman daily's headquarters in İstanbul on Tuesday to join an event held to celebrate the İstanbul team's title.

The 35-year-old joined the cheerful employees of the Zaman Media Group, which includes the Zaman daily and Today's Zaman, in the afternoon and cut the championship cake with renowned sports writer Ahmet Çakır. Many fans queued to take photographs with the famous footballer.

Ayhan, as he is usually called, announced that he would retire after his team won the championship in Saturday's game against archrival Fenerbahçe. Also the former national team midfielder, Ayhan joined Galatasaray in 2001 and stayed with the team until now. He had previously worn the jersey of İstanbul giant Beşiktaş between 1998 and 2001 and before that played for Gaziantepspor, where he made his name.
