Train collision leaves 15 injured in southern Turkey

10 May 2012, Thursday /TODAY’S ZAMAN
Two passenger trains collided at a train station in Adana early on Friday, leaving 13 passengers and two crew members injured.

Turkish State Railways (TCDD) reported that a passenger train traveling from the Mediterranean port city of Mersin to Adana was hit by an empty passenger train maneuvering at the station in Adana’s Mithatpaşa neighborhood on Friday.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals. No one was seriously hurt in the accident, and most of the injured have already been released from the hospital.

Following the incident, Adana Police Chief Mehmet Avcı and TCDD 6th Regional Director Mustafa Çopur examined the scene and questioned station officials over the details of the incident.

Şamil G. and Kasım Ç., the engineers of the empty train that crashed into the train full of passengers, were taken to the police station to give statements.

The rail line, which was closed following the incident, reopened after TCDD staff had removed the wrecked trains from the rails with the help of cranes and had repaired the damaged track.

A similar accident took place last month in the central province of Niğde which left 12 people injured when a passenger train running from Arifiye to Adana was hit from behind by a freight train while it was waiting at a station. Five passengers in the passenger train and seven workers on the freight train were injured in the crash.
