The operation was launched by the İstanbul Police Department's anti-terror bureau in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the Okmeydanı neighborhood of Şişli. After following the activities of the small group for months, police raided the office of the Federation of Youth Associations, which is affiliated with extremist leftist groups. The detainees are suspected of involvement in illegal activities and conducting violent protests.
Police secured the area prior to the raid, and when they surrounded the office building members of the Federation of Youth Associations chanted slogans and threw eggs and bottles at the police through windows. They refused to open the door despite demands from the police.
Police broke down the door, detained the group members and took them to the İstanbul Police Department after a medical examination at a forensic medicine institute.
