Kosovar Deputy PM Edita Tahiri visits Turkey seeking support

3 May 2012, Thursday /TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH WIRES
Kosovar Deputy Prime Minister Edita Tahiri met with Turkish officials as part of an official visit to Turkey and sought to boost diplomatic and economic relations as the small Balkan country struggles to gain recognition from more countries.

As it faces tough challenges in the international arena over the issue of its recognition as a country, Turkey’s bold backing in that bid is critical for Kosovo, which unilaterally declared its independence in 2008.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu met Kosovar Deputy Prime Minister Tahiri over breakfast in Ankara on Thursday. During the meeting, Tahiri discussed regional issues with Davutoğlu as well as the dialogue process between Serbia and Kosovo. Among other topics, recent events in Kosovo and the Balkans, EU prospects and bids for membership in other international organizations were discussed during the meeting, sources from the Foreign Ministry noted.

On the same day Tahiri also met with her Turkish counterpart, Bekir Bozdağ, in Ankara. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Bozdağ reiterated Turkey’s support for Kosovo’s membership bid to international organizations such as NATO and the EU and its securing of recognition from more countries.
