Turkey has no “enemy countries” within the scope of its foreign policy, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu declared during the closing ceremony of the 18th International Young Diplomats Training Program on Wednesday.

“According to the principles of Turkish foreign policy, there are two kinds of countries: friendly and potentially friendly countries,” said Davutoğlu, addressing the young diplomats at the ceremony. “The purpose of diplomacy is to bring peace and reconciliation to the world,” said Davutoğlu, underlining that ensuring peace and stability in the global era was the main duty of diplomats.

Touching upon the purpose of diplomacy, Davutoğlu stated that the main aim was to maintain peace between brothers and that the most important factor in maintaining peace was related to mutual understanding. In this context, Davutoğlu said the latest round of negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program between Iran and the so-called “5+1” group -- the UN Security Council’s five permanent members -- the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France and China, plus Germany -- held in İstanbul was an example of this mutual understanding. “Lack of trust is the major problem between parties of a dispute, and this originates from the parties not knowing each other well,” said Davutoğlu.

A total of 77 young diplomats from different countries received their certificates from Davutoğlu during the ceremony, which was held at the Ankara Palas state guesthouse.

Following the ceremony, Davutoğlu met Commissioner-General Filippo Grandi from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The main item on the agenda of the meeting was the situation of Palestinian refugees.

Grandi underlined that the Israeli embargo of Gaza was harming the Palestinian people and thanked Turkey for its contributions to UNRWA. Davutoğlu also quoted his own previous opinions regarding the embargo. The issue of Syria and the effects on regional countries were also discussed in the meeting.
