Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has said he does not see the establishment of an independent Kurdish state as a possibility in the near future.

“I don't think there is anything impossible in the world, but in the near future, I don't see any possibility for this,” Talabani said on Monday during an interview with Al-Jazeera's English-language news network on Sunday when asked whether he thinks there will ever be an independent Kurdistan.

Responding to a question on whether the Kurdish regional administration in northern Iraq would declare independence, Talabani said he does not see this as a possibility.

“We must be very frank with you -- not only is independence not possible, but also now it is in the interests of Kurdish people to remain within the framework of Iraq. You know this era, this century, is not the era of small countries -- it is of big unions. Look to Europe, they are trying to reunite-- look to other countries. So it is within the framework of a democratic federal Iraq that we are engaging in all activities, and we have all kinds of freedom and we have all possibilities … but we must be realistic,” he said.

P. H. Kollmann, I lay out my arguments in more clear and sophisticated manner than you and the illiterate kurds here and my arguments have the most important thing behind them, the truth, and you have have the nerve to falsely accuse me of lacking "intellectuality" (that's a redundancy, by the way, ...
dario, there is no such thing as kurdistan nor has there ever been nor will there ever be. LOL, "durchs wilde Kurdistan" is a FICTIONAL adventure novel written by a German Orientalist. It just proves my point anyway that kurdish nationalism is an invention of 19th century christian European imperi...
honer, kurds are only nominally Muslim by the good grace of Turks, Persians, and Arabs. They however have demonstrated that they are prepared to kill Muslims on behalf of foreign imperialists.
true, there is no such thing as "kurdistan" nor has there ever been nor will there ever be.
mede guerilla, there is no such thing as "kurdistan" nor has there ever been nor will there ever be.
It really is not important whether there ever was a Kurdistan before. It isn't going to happen now. Can you imagine yet another battle between all the Kurds for supremacy in their own lands? Is isn't going to ever happen and people need to get on with life. Simple
Sure there was a Kurdistan! If some people would read historical work or at least look into old maps in the museums, they would know that there was a Kurdistan. But some of the commentators lack of intellectuality like GeneralSherman. Obviously they didn't had the needed education or don't want to a...

@Generalsherman. Did you know there is a Native American territory in the middle of Denver, CO? Did you know that they have their own law which (among other things) makes it okey to smoke pot? Native American have been smoking it for centuries and their own laws doesnt prohibit it. Maybe Honor is in...
Native American DO HAVE SELF GOVERNANCE!!! Many tribes in the USA have their own land where THEIR LAWS are primary. Federal law is only secondary. Go learn something! The America you hate on so much have a lot to teach you about freedom.
Mr Jalal is a pro Kurd and do support a independent southern Kurdistan. He is even more nationalistic than Barzani since Barzani and his father stod for a federal Iraq which it isn't. But Jalal has always supported a free southern kurdistan. In this interview he is speaking for Iraq since he is the ...

Shwan Hawezi, is that what you tell yourself so you can sleep at night? What's more likely: that he's just saying these things like you hopeless kurdish nationalists like to tell yourselves? Or that Talabani realizes that a landlocked kurdish state would be starved out by its neighbors and if that...
honer, first, learn some English because everything you write is incomprehensible. Second, there is not "45 million" kurds in the world. Your numbers are 20-24 million at most? LOL, how can you just invent 20-25 million kurds like that? Here let me give it a try. Did you know that there are 1 B...
dario, you have no idea what you are talking about. There is no such thing as "kurdistan" nor has there ever been nor will there ever be. No, an independent "kurdistan" is not closer than ever. It is as distant as ever. Talabani realizes that a landlocked kurdish state would be starved out by it...
Talabani is fooling you Arabs and Turks. Everyone knows he's good at it. Jalal Talabani is an ultra nationalist, but at the same time he is very pragmatic, so of course he won't say he wants Southern Kurdistan to secede from that failed country Iraq when he holds the post of presidency.
Shwan Hawezi
kurd, there's no such thing as "kurdistan", north or south, nor has there ever been. LOL, Turkiye "learn" from Iraq? What could Turkiye possibly "learn" from Iraq. You should be banned from existence just for saying something so stupid. What "federation"? A federation implies a union of parts. ...
hi GeneralSherman kurdistan has been for 3000 years look the history ok thank you i know when you born they have been telling you that there is no kurdistan but it is 45 mlion kurdish look youtube kurdistan oldest place on earth 2011 look than think about what you saying
as a kurd Talabani do not reprresent me at all. that is why he lost all his support within his own party in sulmania and now (Goran) or changes movemnt lead by Nawsherwan mustafa has taken over in Talabani on strong hold. remember talabani once was saying there are not kurds inSyria while talabani w...

Talabani has lost his popularity amoung Kurds for saying such things..most of his party members left and join the opposition Gorran..he is now hopping to hang on to power through the support of the enemies of Kurds i.e. the neighbouring countries. he is trying to say i am the only one who keep kurds...
honer, there is no such thing as "kurdistan", north or south, nor has there ever been.
He does not represent Kurdish people anymore.Since he is doing very well for himself and his family, the interest of Kurdish people is secondary to him to him and his cronies.
shavan Zober
Look at that! Turkey should learn from Iraq, Federation is best option for Turkey too. Kurds need self governance! People need to have control of their own lives.
i am kurdish from south kurdistan .. i think he was kurdish President or ledar but not any more when he was talking he just talk about iran how they are good and arabic .. i am not say they are bad but he didnt say any good word about kurdish people
