The İstanbul Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation against pianist Fazıl Say over statements he made on Twitter about Islam and Islamic values.

Earlier this week, Say sent controversial tweets questioning whether heaven in Islamic belief is like a brothel or pub because the Quran says there are rivers of drinks and houris [very beautiful women] in heaven for those who commit good deeds while they are on earth.

Say also tweeted about a muezzin who recited the evening call for prayer in 22 seconds, questioning whether he was in a rush to reunite with his lover or go to the rakı table.

The prosecutor's office has found Say's statements run contrary to the first and third points of the 216th Article of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK). These points concern the offenses of “fomenting hatred and enmity among the public” and “insulting religious values.”

Say's controversial statements sparked a widespread reaction. The pianist later removed the tweets from his account.

@Me and others, what crap are you on about. In Europe and the USA, free speech has restrictions. Saying the Haulocost and the Armenian genocide didn't happen is illegal. As for vilication, its illegal in many countries. Free speech should have boundaries, now the debat is where are these boundaries....

CHRISTOPH I guess Zaman has equal protection for religions. REad my first post below. I defamed a religious figure with a name similar to yours and they bleeped it. So they were hoping not to offend the Christian readership I guess.

I can only imagine that the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office has free time on its hands.Fazil Say has used wit with his comments which clearly is lacking in the Turkish government circles. @Me, Hate speech may be legal in the US but it is prohibited in most Eropean states. Then in the US you have anti-bullying laws which you could consider a limitation on freedom of speech. Bottomline is no democracy will let you say "whatever you like". That said, I fully agree with Christoph about t...

HS, the problem is in Turkey prohibitions against defaming religious Faiths are selective. Protection for Sunni Islam is the focus and all other Faith's are not protected. There is bias in interpretation of the laws.

TURKCAN Turks need to get over the "respect" issue! It is wonderful where you can say whatever you like. In America I am free to say that Obama is a dog, and *** and the government actually protects me from people who do not agree with me.(These are not my views, I simply stated this for example)...

HS In a democracy every kind of free speech MUST be allowed. You must defend anyone's right to say what they like, no matter how you feel about the issue. The majority cannot rule without strong protection of the minority. It should not be left to others or the government to judge other people's ...

HS. The problem with your view is that your opinion about religion will limit the freedom of other people, even if they do not share the same opinion about religion. This can be extended to other fields such as "I am religious so I am offended if other people drink" or "Since I am religious I do not...

Secularism means that the State is not run by a religion. It does not mean that the State cannot make any laws regarding religion if they are deemed beneficial to the public good. Turks, being mainly religious people, obviously feel that gratuitous insults towards religion should not be allowed. In ...
