China urges Syrian gov't, opposition to back truce

10 April 2012 /AP
China has again called for the Syrian government and opposition forces to immediately back a truce deal arranged by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said Tuesday that Beijing backs Annan's six-point proposal to end the fighting and wants to create favorable conditions for a political resolution to the Syrian crisis.

China and Russia have twice shielded Damascus from UN sanctions over President Bashar Assad's crackdown on a yearlong uprising that has killed more than 9,000.
