President Gül received 2,725 questions from the public in the second stage of “Write to the president,” a section on the website of the Presidency. The number of questions has been lowered to 90 by moderators and opened to a public vote. The president will answer the 10 questions that receive the highest number of votes and the writers will be hosted at the Çankaya presidential palace.
One of the most frequently asked questions is whether Gül has plans to return to the head of the AK Party and become the prime minister after his tenure as president ends.
There are expectations that current Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will leave the AK Party leadership and be elected to the Presidency in 2014. Gül is the leading candidate for the AK Party leadership.
The Presidency in Ankara receives roughly 11,000 emails and letters every month. Gül has asked Presidency staff to review every single message. Since taking office in 2007, the president has focused on developing means of communicating with citizens. Through “Write to the president,” people have been given the opportunity to make their voices heard. Numerous people who sent messages to Gül were hosted by the president at the Çankaya presidential palace in January.
