Ten construction workers went missing and two others were injured on Friday after the collapse of the dam. Two of the missing workers were later found dead, and as of Sunday search and rescue efforts were continuing for the remaining missing workers.
Adana Governor Hüseyin Avni Coş earlier said the 90 million cubic meters of water stored behind the dam began to escape when one of the floodgates broke open, leading to one cubic meter of water leaking from the dam per second. Heavy equipment was sent to the area to fix the problem.
Dam project director Erdal N. and construction site foreman Öncü B. were detained on Saturday and interrogated at the Kozan District Gendarmerie Command for possible negligence that caused the collapse. They were then sent to the courthouse in Kozan and interrogated. Erdal N. and Öncü B. were subsequently referred to court for arrest, which the court did late on Saturday.
The Adana governor told reporters on Sunday that search and rescue efforts were continuing to find the remaining eight workers, who are believed to be dead. He said the thickness of mud made it harder to find the bodies of the missing construction workers.
Coş noted that the Kozan Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident.
