A man in Turkey's southern province of Antalya fatally injured a police chief who was trying to urge the man to lay down his gun.

Antalya's Konyaaltı district Chief of Police Uğur Gökcan and his team answered a call reporting an unidentified man indiscriminately shooting near a gas station close to Konyaaltı Municipality.

Upon arriving at the scene, Gökcan stepped closer to the man and tried to convince him to turn himself in, but the man refused and tried to take the police chief hostage. Following an attempt to take Gökcan hostage, the man fired on the police officer.

Seriously injured, Gökcan was taken to hospital by air ambulance, but later died. Police officers arrested the assailant.
