Women and children under the age of 12 arrived at the Göztepe stadium in large numbers in İzmir on Sunday as the İzmir side faced Çaykur Rizespor in the Bank Asya League 1.

It was the first-ever game to see a League 1 side play only in front of women and young spectators after Göztepe was issued the penalty of playing behind closed doors. The penalty was transformed by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) last year to allow only women and children under the age of 12 to enter the stadium should it be issued. The federation’s Professional Football Discipline Committee (PFDK) sentenced the İzmir team to play behind closed doors due to the behavior of its boisterous fans during an İzmir derby, where Karşıyaka entertained Göztepe two weeks ago. At the game, Göztepe fans detached seats and set fire to the stadium’s stands. A total of 82 fans from both sides were detained. More than 1,200 women and children were in the stands during Sunday’s game, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Elsewhere Elazığspor was defeated by İzmir side Karşıyaka 2-0 at home but still maintains the lead. Other results were: Akhisar Belediyespor 0, Boluspor 0; Adanaspor 2, İstanbul Güngörenspor 0; Kasımpaşa 2, Denizlispor 0; Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyespor 0, Giresunspor 0; Kayseri Erciyesspor 0, Kartalspor 0; and TKİ Tavşanlı Linyitspor 1, Konyaspor 2.
