Kyrgyz president: No other country helped us like Turkey did

15 January 2012, Sunday /TODAY'S ZAMAN
Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev, who arrived in Turkey last week on his first visit abroad after assuming the presidency to meet Turkish officials, stated that Turkey has helped Kyrgyzstan with millions of dollars in its hard times, speaking at a press conference on Sunday, the last day of his visit.

Atambayev said that he explained to Turkish officials the problems Kyrgyzstan is facing and added that he had asked for Turkish businesses to invest in Kyrgyzstan.

“We announced our independence 20 years ago. However, I cannot say that we are an independent country, yet. Our relations with Turkey will be different than they were in the past; they will improve. I am expecting a lot of changes [in the relations of both countries] this year. Turkey gave us a $21 million loan last year. In addition, Turkey has also wiped out a $52 million debt. No other country has done so much to help us,” said Atambayev, who is a popular president with strong electoral backing of just over 63 percent in the last Kyrgyz elections

A roadmap for cooperation in 2012-2013 and memorandums were signed between the two countries on Thursday.
