Cluster bomb found in university café in Diyarbakır, disaster averted

30 December 2011 /TODAYSZAMAN.COM
Turkish police on Friday disposed of a cluster bomb found in the café of the Diyarbakır-based Dicle University, preventing a possible explosion that would have led to casualties.

Turkish news portal ntvmsnbc.com said that a security worker at the university's engineering faculty found a suspicious package placed in the ventilation of the café of the faculty building. Police teams who arrived at the faculty evacuated the building and bomb disposal units, who ascertained that the package indeed contained a bomb, disposed of the explosive.

Police also searched the building, fearing more bombs would have been placed but no other explosives were found.

It was not immediately clear who planted the bomb at the university café but the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) is active in southeastern Turkey and targeted civilians in many past attacks. The incident also comes on the heels of the killing of 35 civilians in military airstrikes, which reportedly occurred due to intelligence errors.
