Top gov't officials urge Parliament to prepare new, civilian constitution

4 October 2011, Tuesday /TODAY'S ZAMAN
Top officials from the government on Monday called on Parliament to act with discipline in drafting a new, civilian constitution and to complete the process as soon as possible.

Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin spoke to reporters following a conference titled “Situation Analysis and Evaluation in Justice,” conducted by the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) at the Rixos Hotel in Ankara on Monday. He said Parliament plans to draft civilian constitution within a reasonable period of time.

Ergin added that they will be monitoring the preparation process closely and that they want this process to move forward and be completed smoothly.

Ergin said political parties should avoid any act or statement that could damage the process of drafting the constitution.

“The ministry will avoid such actions and speeches, and we expect this conduct from all people involved in the preparation process,” Ergin said.

Attending the opening ceremony of the academic year of Beykent University in İstanbul, the head of the Constitutional Commission, Burhan Kuzu, said the new constitution should be completed in this legislative year and added that the preparations should be uninterrupted.

Attending another opening ceremony of the academic year, that of Niğde University, Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said: “There is a positive atmosphere in Parliament's 24th term. We should benefit from this positive atmosphere in the preparation process.”

Speaking at a press conference at the Justice and Development Party's (AK Party) Manisa provincial branch, Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç said the most prominent issue that Parliament should deal with is the preparation of a new constitution. He added that he hopes that at the end of preparation process Turkish citizens will have an entirely civilian constitution.
