[EXPAT VOICE] A gracious gift

When 9-year-old Anna Grace Casasola saw her nanny Hazel's photographs of the murals at Okçular Village Primary School last year, she was enchanted. She accessed the village website, okcular.net, where there are lots of pictures of the school and the children, and suddenly Okçular was no longer just a place on the map: There were faces of children just like her -- Okçular was real!

Anna had so many questions for Hazel, and when she learned that one of the things the students of Okçular wanted was some science equipment, she decided to do what she could to help. By making and selling “friendship bracelets” and, with help from Hazel, making and selling homemade sweets, Anna has raised TL 360 for Okçular's school.

She couldn't hand over the donation herself, so Hazel made a special visit on her behalf and presented head teacher Adem Çimen and the staff of the school with Anna's gift. In return, Çimen presented Hazel with an official Okçular school polo shirt as a thank-you gift for Anna.

Anna attends a small rural primary school in Fife, Scotland, and lists her interests as playing the piano, horse riding, swimming, hill walking and, most of all, reading. She has a younger sister, Beth, and two dogs, Jack and Moss. I think she can add “international friendship ambassador” to her CV, don't you?

I'm sure that when Okçular's students return for the new term they will want to write to Anna to thank her and, who knows, perhaps new friendships and links will grow from what this remarkable young lady has started.
