International allies on Libya to meet in İstanbul on Thursday

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and members of the international alliance on Libya agreed on Monday that senior diplomats will meet in İstanbul to discuss the next steps for the country, the US State Department said.

Clinton spoke by telephone with members of the "contact group" on Libya, which includes key European and Arab allies, and voiced strong support for Libya's rebel Transitional National Council as it plots a course for a democratic transition in Libya, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

"The plan is for the political directors to meet on Thursday," Nuland said, adding that the İstanbul meeting would allow the international alliance to discuss what types of help they may be able to offer the rebels.

"This must be and will be a Libyan-led transition," she said.

Davutoğlu also met through a teleconference with Turkey’s allies on Monday, diplomatic sources said according to the state-run Anatolia news agency.

Davutoğlu is currently in Addis Ababa and he will leave for Benghazi on Tuesday to have talks with rebels. Initially, Davutoğlu had talks with French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe and United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Davutoğlu also had conversations with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jasim bin Jabir Al Thani, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Canada Foreign Minister John Baird, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, Danish Foreign Minister Lene Espersen and British deputy Foreign Secretary Alistair Burts.
