Courts arrest 14 PKK members in Şanlıurfa, Erzincan

28 May 2011 /TODAYSZAMAN.COM
A court in Şanlıurfa has ruled to arrest five members of the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK), while another court arrested two other members of the outlawed group, all accused of several crimes, including throwing Molotov cocktails at cars and offices.

Şanlıurfa police organized a raid on May 24, detaining six suspects they say are part of the outlawed PKK’s university and neighborhood leg.

After a police interrogation, the six suspects were referred to a court, which charged them with recruiting members for the PKK, holding unsanctioned rallies, and hurling Molotov cocktails at cars and offices.

Suspects Mehmet T., Nihat D., Yunus D., Ubeydullah Ç. and Bulut A. were arrested. H.B.Ö was released by the court pending trial.

Relatives of the arrested PKK members were in court to protest the decision.

In related news, police detained Arif L. (45), S.Ç. (15), İbrahim B. (28) and Halil A. (37) in an operation that was part of an investigation of an unsanctioned rally organized by a group of people, including pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) supporters, in the district of Suruç, Şanlıurfa province, on May 16.

A court convicted İsmet B. and Halil A. of disseminating the propaganda of a terrorist organization.

Suspects Arif L. and S.Ç. have been released pending trial.

Meanwhile, an Erzincan court also arrested seven PKK members for being a part of the terrorist organization.
