Bus driver trades punches with passenger, now under investigation

20 April 2011, Wednesday /TODAY’S ZAMAN
The İstanbul Public Transportation Authority (İETT) this week launched an investigation into a driver who quarreled with two passengers on his bus.

The argument started when the driver of bus number 25T, which runs between Taksim and Sarıyer, warned Onat Baş, who took the bus with his girlfriend, that the bus was not a place for public displays of affection. Baş responded to the driver, and another passenger, Gökçe Koç, supported Baş. Later, the driver got out of the bus, and the quarrel turned into a fistfight between Koç and the bus operator. Koç claimed he was physically attacked by İETT officials at the scene (the main bus station in Taksim) and filed a complaint with the İETT. In a written statement the İETT said they have determined who the driver is and started the necessary proceedings. “We want it to be known that we take seriously every incident in which staff members display poor behavior, and we do not tolerate -- even remotely -- such incidents,” the statement read.

İETT drivers have been receiving public relations, stress and anger management and other courses in universities since last year. The statement also noted that all İETT personnel, especially drivers, have to be careful about their behavior in public despite the difficulty of their job and the stress they experience in traffic.
