Turkish and Iranian presidents discuss security

Turkish and Iranian presidents discussed killings of Turks on Turkish-Iranian border.

President Abdullah Gül brought up killings of suspected smugglers on the border during the meeting between delegations of the two countries.

Gül said that such killings could be prevented and told Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that Iranian security officials should be warned on the issue.

Gül said that they attached a great importance to cooperation in security and combating terrorism.

Ahmadinejad said that border officials of the two countries should hold talks on the matter.

President Gül said that the two countries should take steps to enhance trade and preferential trade agreement must be finalized as soon as possible.

Ahmadinejad said that they were ready to cooperate in the area of energy, stating that they aimed to rise trade volume between the two countries to 30 billion US dollars within next five years.

President Gül also received First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi. The meeting was closed to press.
