Adana Deputy Mayor Zihni Aldırmaz has resigned from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), according to news reports yesterday.
Adana City Council Deputy Speaker Mustafa Tuncel confirmed that Aldırmaz resigned from the party. Sources close to the deputy mayor said his decision came after an attack by an angry mob of MHP supporters at the municipal building. The same sources say Aldırmaz might transfer to the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), but this has not been confirmed officially. Aldırmaz was serving as the acting mayor following the suspension of former Adana Mayor Aytaç Durak by the Interior Ministry following accusations of corruption in late March. Upon Durak’s suspension, a vote was held among members of the Adana City Council, which resulted in a tie between AK Party and MHP candidates.
