Former envoy to Israel appointed to Thailand

According to a decree reshuffling eight ambassadorial posts at the Foreign Ministry, which went into effect over the weekend after being published in the Official Gazette, Turkey’s former ambassador to Israel has been posted to Bangkok as the new ambassador to Thailand.

Oğuz Çelikkol was immediately recalled to Ankara in early June for consultations after Israeli naval commandos killed nine Turks aboard a Gaza-bound aid ship in May. Although a decree appointing Kerim Uras as the new ambassador to Israel went into effect in May, days before the Israeli attack, the post in Tel Aviv is still vacant, with Ankara seriously considering the option of scaling down diplomatic relations between Turkey and Israel to a chargé d’affaires level, or even to a “second secretary,” something it had done once in the early 1980s.

According to the same decree, Turkey’s former ambassador to Italy, Ali Yakıtal, who had survived an investigation over charges of sexual harassment in complaints filed by two female public servants, has been appointed as the country’s new ambassador to New Zealand. Meanwhile, Turkey’s ambassadors to New Zealand, Argentina and Turkmenistan have been posted to headquarters.
